Moscow (ANTARA) -

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, on Wednesday (18/3), warned Japan against engaging in remilitarisation and to comply with the pacifism (anti-war stance) in its constitution if it does not wish to repeat the mistakes of the past.

During a routine briefing, Zakharova stated that Japan has in fact consistently taken steps towards remilitarisation, including the procurement of offensive weapons such as cruise missiles, which cannot be categorised as defensive armaments.

The spokesperson noted that Russia has repeatedly warned Japan about the destructive impact of its sharp increase in military spending, particularly when it involves acquiring weapons that could pose potential threats to the national security of neighbouring countries, including Russia.

According to Zakharova, Japan’s policies have a highly negative impact on regional and global stability, exacerbating tensions in the Asia-Pacific area and potentially sparking a new arms race.

Zakharova emphasised that if new missile threats emerge against Russian territory, Russia will respond and take the necessary measures to ensure its defence capabilities.
