Russia Urges US to Reject Germany's Plan to Build Europe's Strongest Army
Washington (ANTARA) - Russia’s Ambassador to the US, Alexander Darchiev, has urged Washington to reject Germany’s plan to build Europe’s strongest army.
“A dangerous plan that must be jointly opposed by Russia, the US, and all well-intentioned people on our small planet who uphold universal humanitarian values,” Darchiev stated.
He made the remarks at an event at the embassy commemorating Victory Day in the war against Nazi Germany.
He emphasised that current German politicians are devising plans to “Move Eastwards” and form Europe’s strongest army, rather than repenting forever.
Darchiev noted that in Russia, the denial of genocide against the Soviet people has been criminalised.
“Considering the ‘genocide against the Soviet people’ launched by the Nazis in the occupied territories of the Soviet Union, which is now being denied in Europe, especially in the country that started the Second World War, on 19 April, such denial was declared a crime in Russia by the court,” the diplomat said.
The Red Army, or Soviet Army, achieved a great victory that saved humanity from enslavement and extermination by the German-Japanese Axis of Evil, at a very high price - 27 million lives of Soviet citizens, including 17 million civilians, he continued.
As stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in their joint statement in 2020, the struggle against a common enemy was the pinnacle and a real example of Russian-American partnership, Darchiev added.
“The historic handshake between Red Army soldiers and US Army soldiers on the Elbe River right in the heart of Nazi Germany on 25 April 1945 will always be a symbol of that,” the diplomat said.
Earlier in April, Germany officially approved a military strategy for the first time in its history.
The document sets the goal of creating Europe’s strongest ground forces by 2039.
Russia is defined in the strategy as the “primary threat.”
