Russia to Resume Oil and Gas Project in Tuna Block Next Month to Strengthen Energy Resilience

The strategic upstream oil and gas project in the Tuna Block, Natuna Sea, is set to resume. Zarubezhneft, a Russian oil and gas company, through its subsidiary VNIIneft, has expressed its readiness to continue operational activities in the block, which borders Vietnam, starting next month.

The continuation of this project is a breath of fresh air for the national oil and gas production target, after previously experiencing operational obstacles due to the impact of international sanctions against Russian companies. The Tuna Block plays a crucial role not only from an economic perspective but also as an affirmation of Indonesia’s sovereignty in the border area.

Based on the information gathered, the technical preparations for the mobilization of equipment and personnel have entered the final stage. The main focus next month is to continue the development phase that was previously delayed, including coordination with SKK Migas regarding the drilling schedule and the update of the Plan of Development (PoD).

The Tuna Block is estimated to have significant gas reserves with an estimated production of 100 to 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD). The gas from this block is planned to be exported to Vietnam via an underwater pipeline, which is expected to generate significant foreign exchange revenue for the country.

In addition to the economic aspect, the presence of oil and gas activities in the Tuna Block has strategic geopolitical value. Permanent activities in the area indirectly strengthen Indonesia’s position in the North Natuna Sea, which is often a hotspot for territorial claims by foreign parties.

The involvement of Russia through Zarubezhneft previously raised concerns about financial transactions and procurement of goods and services due to global sanctions. However, the Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and SKK Migas, continues to seek pragmatic solutions so that this project can continue for the sake of regional energy security.

“The continuation of this project shows that the investment climate in the Indonesian oil and gas sector remains attractive and we are able to navigate global geopolitical challenges for national interests,” said one internal source in the upstream oil and gas industry.

With the resumption of activities in the Tuna Block next month, the government is optimistic that the national gas lifting target can be boosted, while also strengthening energy cooperation between Indonesia and international partners in the midst of complex global dynamics.
