Moscow (ANTARA) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Wednesday that his country has reaffirmed its firm solidarity with Cuba amidst unprecedented external pressures facing the Cuban people. “In the midst of unprecedented external pressures against the Cuban people, we once again convey our steadfast solidarity and support,” said Lavrov in a telegram conveying birthday wishes for the 95th anniversary of former Cuban President Raul Castro.

Lavrov noted that Russia and Cuba will continue to work “together” to strengthen cooperation, both bilaterally and within international forums, to build a fair multipolar world order. He also expressed high regard for his memories of meeting Raul Castro on several occasions, noting their many honest and meaningful conversations. Lavrov further extended his wishes for Castro’s continued health, fortitude, and prosperity.

In recent months, the United States has increased political and economic pressure on Cuba. In January, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to impose tariffs on imports from countries supplying oil to Cuba. Trump also declared a national emergency, citing an alleged threat from Cuba to US national security. These measures have exacerbated fuel shortages in Cuba, impacting power plants, transport, food production, healthcare, and education.
