Russia ready to support US-Iran mediation

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov has said Moscow is ready to support mediation efforts to end the conflict between Iran and the United States and to help maintain stability in the Middle East.

“If requested, Russia is ready to support mediation efforts, both to end the aggression against Iran and, more broadly, to maintain stability in the Middle East, including within the framework of the updated security concept for the Persian Gulf that we are promoting,” Alimov told the Izvestia newspaper, as quoted by RIA Novosti.

Earlier, on 8 July, US President Donald Trump announced that the ceasefire reached between his country and Iran would no longer be in effect from 18 June.

Since then, the US military has carried out several strikes against Iran. US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed this was in response to Iranian actions against commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran retaliated with attacks on US bases in several Middle Eastern countries, closed the Strait of Hormuz, and accused the US of violating the ceasefire agreement.
