Russia Ready to Strengthen Naval Cooperation Through Arrival of Warships
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Russia has shown its readiness to strengthen cooperation with the Indonesian National Armed Forces Navy (TNI AL) through the arrival of a Russian naval unit that has docked at Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta.
Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov stated during a press conference at Tanjung Priok on Tuesday that the Russian naval unit, which docked from 29 March to 2 April, consists of the corvette Gromky-335, the submarine Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky B-274, and the tugboat Andrey Stepanov.
“Our presence does not pose a threat to neighbouring countries or other nations in the Indonesian region. On the contrary, it is a symbol of our readiness to cooperate with Indonesia through joint exercises and the exchange of experiences,” said Ambassador Tolchenov.
In addition to joint exercises, Ambassador Tolchenov said the visit of the ships is also intended to introduce examples of modern military equipment and warships to the Indonesian public.
According to him, the submarine Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky B-274 is one of the best and most modern in the world. Furthermore, the Gromky-335 is also among the flagship warships of the Pacific Fleet.
Russia, he continued, is opening opportunities for Indonesia to adopt Russian capabilities and technology to enhance its maritime defence capabilities.
“We understand that the TNI Navy also operates similar types of ships. Nevertheless, we hope to open opportunities to introduce other types of equipment, so that in the future Indonesia can also consider using similar platforms from Russia to enhance its defence capabilities,” he said.
Present on the occasion was Deputy Commander of the North-East Pacific Fleet Forces Rear Admiral Evgeny N. Myasoedov, who said that relations between the Indonesian Navy and the Russian Navy have been established for many years, and the friendship between the two has grown stronger over time.
“For many years, we have conducted joint exercises and joint training at the headquarters level. We also make mutual visits to demonstrate our friendship and partnership,” he said.
Regarding peace, stability, and security in the Asia-Pacific region, Myasoedov said that Russia is working to promote the normal development of inter-state relations, and believes that relations between the armed forces are supported by strong partnerships, mutual understanding, and a commitment to maintaining good relations.
Indonesia previously welcomed the arrival of Russian Navy ships from the Pacific Fleet in May 2025 for a visit and joint exercises, as well as to mark the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Russia diplomatic relations.
The Russian Navy ships that docked at Tanjung Priok at that time were the Corvette Aldar Tsidenzhapov-339, Rezkiy-343, and the tanker Pechenga. The three ships were known to have participated in the 5th Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo 2025 (MNEK) in February 2025.
