Russia Provides Free Education Quota, Hundreds of Indonesian Students Seize Opportunity
More than 500 Indonesian students are pursuing education at various universities in Russia this academic year. A significant portion of them have obtained tuition-free opportunities through an education quota provided by the Russian Federation Government for foreign students.
This programme is one of the pathways utilised by Indonesian students to continue higher education in diverse fields, ranging from international relations, management, and medicine to oil and gas. Several students have also chosen study programmes in technology, such as computer science, mathematics, and information technology.
Russian Deputy Minister of Education and Science Andrey Omelchuk stated that his country continues to expand access to quality education for international students through various support schemes. “Russia offers extensive opportunities for foreign nationals to obtain high-quality education free of charge, and these opportunities are actively utilised by students,” Omelchuk said in a written statement quoted on Friday (12/6/2026).
According to him, the Russian Government is also developing additional grant programmes to attract high-achieving students from various countries. This programme provides broader support than just tuition fee waivers. “Winners and runners-up of the International Open Doors Olympiad receive a wider support package, which includes not only tuition fee waivers and scholarships but also travel expenses, accommodation, and health insurance,” he said.
Russia is a popular destination for international students. The country currently hosts around 400,000 foreign students, while more than 1.5 million graduates of Russian and Soviet educational institutions work in over 180 countries.
The Russian higher education system offers a combination of academic learning and practical experience. Students can utilise laboratories with modern equipment and undergo internship programmes at leading companies during their studies.
Another advantage for Indonesian students is the mutual recognition agreement on education between Indonesia and Russia. This agreement allows degrees obtained from Russian universities to be officially recognised in Indonesia without the need for a complicated additional verification process.
The Russian Government opens various pathways for prospective international students. In addition to the government scholarship quota, tuition-free opportunities can also be obtained through achievements in olympiads organised by Russian universities or international competitions.
Registration for fee-paying programmes at Russian universities opens in June. Prospective students can choose their target university and submit documents through the university’s official website, the Ru.ID platform, or the admissions committee at the respective campus.
Russia is also continuously developing campuses with international standards, equipped with modern study rooms, co-working spaces, libraries, as well as sports and creative facilities. Various student communities available on campus also serve as a means for international students to develop their interests and build international networks.
