Moscow — Russia has demanded that Japan withdraw US-made Typhon missile systems from its territory, stated Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova on Friday (18/9), according to Xinhua.

“On 3 September, a note of protest was submitted to the Japanese authorities in Moscow and Tokyo regarding the deployment of US-based land-based Typhon systems, designed to launch medium- and short-range missiles, on Kyushu Island,” Zakharova said in a statement.

Furthermore, she stated that the deployment of Typhon launchers within Japanese territory is unacceptable under any circumstances and demanded that the launchers be removed from Japan.

Zakharova also emphasised that Japan must fully recognise the outcomes of the Second World War, including territorial aspects concerning the southern part of the Kuril Islands, and cease its remilitarisation policies.

On 1 September, during a briefing on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Zakharova stated that the Japanese Embassy had been clearly informed that the deployment of such weaponry in Japanese territory, even under the pretext of military exercises, “is entirely unacceptable as it poses a threat to Russian security.”
