Russia Predicts US-Iran Agreement Will End in Deadlock

The process of reaching a final agreement between Iran and the United States will be very difficult, said Russian Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev on Saturday (4/7). Medvedev stated that a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States has become the basis for continuing the negotiation process between the two countries. “Now there is a document and the deadlines for reaching a number of final agreements have passed. Honestly, I think this process will be very difficult. It will be very difficult to reach an agreement on a number of issues, including, for example, the allocation of funds for the reconstruction of Iran,” Medvedev told reporters. Previously, on Friday (3/7), Medvedev visited Iran to attend a farewell ceremony for former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Delegations from Central Asia also attended the ceremony, including Turkmenistan’s National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, Uzbekistan’s Parliament Chairman Nuriddin Ismoilov, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev, Kyrgyzstan’s Parliament Chairman Marlyn Mamataliyev, and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev. Other high-ranking officials paying their respects included Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili, Belarusian House of Representatives Chairman Igor Sergeyenko, Egyptian Senate Chairman Abdel Wahab Abdel Razek, and Afghan Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar, as well as a Chinese delegation led by Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress He Wei.
