Russia Panics as Iran's Nuclear Site is Bombed, Directly Calls Israeli Military

The area around Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant was reportedly hit by an airstrike from the US and Israeli militaries on Saturday (05/04/2026). This attack prompted an emergency response from Russia, which immediately evacuated hundreds of its technicians from the site.

Citing a report from The Times of Israel, the strike near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, partially built and operated by Russia, resulted in the death of one guard. Russia’s state nuclear company, Rosatom, identified the fatality as an Iranian national and stated that it had evacuated staff from the facility since the Iran war broke out at the end of February.

Public broadcaster Kan, citing a diplomatic official, reported that senior Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) officials had coordinated with senior Russian figures regarding the evacuation of 198 workers on Saturday, without providing further details.

Rosatom’s head, Alexei Likhachev, issued a highly concerning statement about the current on-site conditions. Russian news agencies quoted Likhachev as saying that the security situation around the power plant is currently extremely dangerous.

“Developments near the power plant are unfolding in line with the worst-case scenario,” Likhachev stated.

Likhachev added that his organisation is closely monitoring the situation and has reported the latest conditions to the highest leadership in Moscow. This underscores the seriousness of the attack’s impact on nuclear operations in the region.

“Rosatom has informed Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation around the power plant,” Likhachev said, according to TASS news agency.

On the other hand, the threat of a horrific environmental disaster now looms over the Gulf region if the attacks continue. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, issued a stark warning about the potential for a radiation disaster that could wipe out life in neighbouring countries.

“Continued attacks on the power plant on Iran’s southern coast could ultimately lead to radioactive fallout that would end life in GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) capitals, not Tehran,” Araghchi emphasised.

Geographically, Bushehr’s location is much closer to Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar than to Iran’s own capital. In the event of a nuclear leak, those neighbouring countries would be the most directly affected by the radioactive cloud.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, also reacted via a social media post regarding the incident. Although radiation levels are reported to remain normal, Grossi expressed deep concerns as this is the fourth such incident in recent weeks.

“Nuclear power plants or nearby areas must not be attacked. No increase in radiation levels has been reported at the site, but there remains deep concern over this attack,” Grossi stated.

Saturday’s strike marks the fourth time Bushehr has been targeted during the ongoing war. The pressurised water reactor at the site actually supplies electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes and industries, though it currently contributes only about 1% to 2% of Iran’s total electricity needs.

The Iranian government is actually working to expand the facility by adding several new reactors. In 2019, Iran began a project planned to add two additional reactors at the site, each increasing capacity by 1,000 megawatts.
