Russia Openly Defends Iran, Labels US-Israel as "The Culprits"
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Russian government under President Vladimir Putin has officially condemned the military actions of the United States (US) and Israel against Iran. Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russia described the actions of both countries as “illegal aggression”.
This is in connection with recent attacks on civilian infrastructure. Not only that, nuclear facilities under international supervision were also not spared from the attacks.
One of them was the repeated attacks on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), which caused casualties. Russia assesses that this situation increases the risk of a radiological disaster that could be more severe than the Chernobyl tragedy.
“This conflict has killed thousands of civilians, including women and children, and caused widespread suffering,” reads Russia’s official statement quoted from the Russia Today (RT) website, Tuesday (7/4/2026).
“Schools, hospitals, and cultural heritage sites have been destroyed, while diplomatic and consular missions have been attacked, violating the Vienna Convention,” it added.
The same sentiment was expressed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He stated that the war involving the US and Israel has set the entire Middle East ablaze.
According to him, the negative impacts of the US and Israel’s actions are beginning to spread to larger geographical areas. Indeed, this is disrupting global stability.
“Tensions continue to rise, with almost the entire region burning. This is all a dangerous and highly negative consequence of the aggression launched against Iran,” he said.
“The geography of the conflict has expanded, and now we are seeing the results, including very negative impacts on the global economy,” Peskov added.
He also noted that these military operations have disrupted world energy and food security due to the blocking of major logistics routes. Experts warn of economic slowdowns and rising inflation in vulnerable countries.
“Russia has warned from the beginning that such consequences are unavoidable,” Peskov explained, emphasising Moscow’s early warnings.
It should be noted that this open conflict began on 28 February when the US and Israel attacked Tehran and killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This then triggered the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments.
The war expanded after Iran responded to attacks from Washington and West Jerusalem by raining missiles and drones on US bases in the Middle East as well as Israeli territory. The involvement of other regional actors such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iraqi militias, and the Houthi group in Yemen has further complicated the security situation along maritime trade routes.
As a result, a global energy shock occurred immediately with spikes in oil and gas prices burdening consumers worldwide. Shortages are even occurring everywhere due to limited supplies.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump issued a harsh statement via social media demanding that Tehran immediately open the Strait of Hormuz. Trump threatened to destroy Iranian bridges and power plants if the demand is not met by Tuesday.
“Open that strait, or you will live in hell,” Donald Trump wrote in his social media post.
The Kremlin itself refrained from further commenting on the language used by Trump in the threat. Peskov emphasised that the main focus now is on the real impacts of the expanding conflict on the ground.
Russia is now urging an immediate halt to hostilities to avoid an increasingly uncontrollable situation. Moscow welcomes mediation efforts from Pakistan, Turkey, and China, and supports the UN Secretary-General’s call to stop the fighting.
