Russia: Only Nuclear Weapons Prevent Global War

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Wednesday that nuclear weapons are currently the only thing preventing a global war. “The state of global security can now be described as quite eroded, in many respects. Apart from nuclear deterrence, we have nothing else in the world. This is the only thing that protects the world from a global war,” Peskov said at the Primakov Readings forum. The senior Kremlin official noted that the overall potential for regional conflicts is increasing. Peskov remarked that there are currently no means or mechanisms in the world for conducting negotiations on security issues. “Once again, technology is developing in such a way that new types of weapons will inevitably emerge, non-nuclear, but in the future capable of matching the destructive power of nuclear weapons,” Peskov said. At the same time, the spokesman noted that the global nuclear deterrence mechanism is still functioning and the Russian government is aware of this.
