Russia Offers Free University Education Opportunities for Indonesian Students

The Russian Federation is offering free university education opportunities for Indonesian students through various available schemes. “Russia offers broad opportunities for foreign citizens to obtain high-quality education free of charge, and this opportunity is actively utilised by students,” said Russian Deputy Minister of Education and Science Andrey Omelchuk in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday. Andrey noted that students can choose to pursue education at their own expense or for free, with the admissions process at Russian universities commencing in June. He explained that free study opportunities are available through two pathways. First, through quotas provided by the Government of the Russian Federation. Second, by becoming a winner or runner-up in Olympiads organised by Russian universities or international Olympiads. “Last year we launched a new grant programme to support talented prospective students. Winners and runners-up of the Open Doors International Olympiad receive a broader support package, which includes not only tuition fee waivers and scholarships, but also travel expenses, accommodation, and health insurance,” he said. Andrey revealed that there are currently around 400,000 international students studying in Russia, of whom approximately 500 are Indonesian students. The fields of study most popular among Indonesian students in Russia include international relations, management, medicine, and oil and gas. Additionally, a number of Indonesian students also choose study programmes in technical fields, such as computer science, mathematics, information technology, and various other disciplines. Various advantages that students can obtain in Russia include the ability to work in more than 180 countries, as well as degree equivalency, meaning Russian diplomas can be officially recognised in Indonesia without having to go through complicated additional verification procedures. “The Russian Ministry of Education and Science strives to ensure that talented students from abroad can fully focus on their studies and feel as comfortable as possible while in our country,” said Andrey Omelchuk. Previously, Indonesia’s Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, stated that his ministry had strengthened cooperation in the higher education sector with the Russian Federation. Through this agreement, both countries will promote exchanges of students, lecturers, and researchers, organise joint research programmes, facilitate scholarships, and promote the learning of each other’s languages and cultures. “I believe that higher education must be a bridge of civilisation. The hope is that this collaboration will open more opportunities for the younger generations of both countries to learn, innovate, and contribute to a better future,” said Brian Yuliarto.
