Russia Launches Massive Assault on Kyiv, Targeting Energy Hubs
Russian attacks on Kyiv and its surrounding areas have killed at least four people, including a child, according to Ukrainian officials. Moscow has continued its weeks-long bombardment of the Ukrainian capital.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the series of attacks in the early hours of Wednesday (1/10/2026) local time targeted energy facilities, damaging the power grid and disrupting electricity supplies within and around the capital. The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed that its forces had struck electrical infrastructure in the Kyiv region, as reported by Al Jazeera.
DTEK, Ukraine’s primary private energy company, stated that officials have restored power to approximately 8,000 households following the explosions. The company added that damage to parts of the power grid further strains an energy system that has been repeatedly hit throughout the war.
Kyiv remained under air raid alerts throughout the night as missiles and drones approached the city. Ukrainian officials reported damage to residential homes, businesses, warehouses, and vehicles.
Kyiv officials reported three deaths in the capital, while emergency services confirmed the death of a child in a suburban area. Zelenskyy added that critical infrastructure in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, and Rivne regions was also attacked.
The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the night operation utilised a combination of missiles and drones. The attacks were directed at energy facilities in the Kyiv region, which Moscow claims are linked to Ukrainian military production. Moscow also claimed to have struck communication facilities in Kyiv and port infrastructure in the southern city of Izmail.
