Russia Hopes US and Iran Maintain Peace Commitment
The Russian government has welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the conflict between them, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday (18/6).
“We welcome the agreement reached to end the military conflict between the United States and Iran, which was agreed upon by the presidents of both countries,” the ministry said in a statement.
It is crucial for all parties involved in the conflict to adhere to the agreement reached by Iran and the United States and to prevent any new escalation, the statement read.
The Russian Foreign Ministry added that Iran’s reaffirmation of its commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is the best response to any baseless attacks and accusations directed at Tehran.
“We hope that achieving peace will help restore trust in relations between countries on both sides of the Persian Gulf, as well as the resumption of safe and unimpeded navigation through the Strait of Hormuz,” the ministry said.
Moscow also expressed its readiness to continue providing diplomatic support for long-term stabilisation efforts in the Middle East.
The United States explained that the MoU includes several key points, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s commitment regarding its nuclear programme.
US Vice President JD Vance revealed that the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran regarding the peace agreement has not yet been published. The document is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on 19 June.
On Thursday morning, Sharif announced that the historic Islamabad MoU between the US and Iran would take effect immediately upon signing.
Three oil tankers carrying Iranian crude were reported to have successfully exited the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday (16/6), bypassing the American blockade.
