Russia expresses concern over France and Britain's plans to boost nuclear weapons
Russia on Wednesday, 4 March, expressed concern over France and Britain’s decision to boost their nuclear weapons, and warned of the implications for Russia’s national security.
In a press briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said London and Paris intend to increase their nuclear arsenals beyond international limits.
Zakharova said the decision represents a continuation of their long-standing policy of avoiding participation in any nuclear arms control treaty.
She added that the expansion of NATO’s nuclear capabilities demands greater attention and ‘very careful consideration’ in the development and planning of Russia’s military.
The spokesperson also said Russia is increasingly convinced that any future nuclear arms control arrangements involving Moscow must take into account NATO’s overall nuclear capabilities.
French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, 2 March, announced that he had ordered an increase in France’s nuclear warheads to bolster the country’s arsenal. He said he was prepared to incorporate a European dimension into France’s advanced nuclear deterrence concept.
Several European countries, including the United Kingdom, have expressed interest in the concept, Macron said, noting that Paris, London, and Berlin will work together on projects involving long-range missiles as part of efforts to strengthen Europe’s defence capability.
