Russia Defends Iran, Calls United States and Israel "Traitors"

In an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Russia’s Permanent Deputy Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya levelled fierce criticism against the United States and Israeli military operations targeting Iranian territory. Nebenzya characterised the strikes as a betrayal by the United States and Israel of the UN Charter.

“This is a stab in the back against diplomacy. The attacks were carried out in the midst of active negotiation processes, proving that the US and Israel do not possess genuine intentions for a peaceful settlement,” Nebenzya stated before the Security Council members.

Nebenzya emphasised that the strike operation, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” constitutes a betrayal of the peace process. According to him, the attacks occurred precisely when Iran and the United States were on the verge of diplomatic progress through Omani mediation.

Russia also highlighted the devastating humanitarian impact. Nebenzya cited reports of hundreds of fatalities, including an attack that struck a girls’ school in Minab, killing dozens of children.

Furthermore, Russia warned of the risk of global nuclear catastrophe. Moscow rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that the operation aimed to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons programme. Nebenzya stated that the targeted facilities are under International Atomic Energy Agency supervision and there is no strong evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

“The actions of Washington and West Jerusalem are nothing other than unjustified armed aggression against a sovereign UN member state,” he added.

Russia has urged the United States and Israel to immediately cease their aggressive actions. Nebenzya cautioned that this escalation could trigger an uncontrollable regional conflict and damage global energy and economic stability. Russia stated its readiness to facilitate dialogue to draw the region back from the brink of major warfare.
