Russia: Congress will not allow the US to leave NATO

Moscow (ANTARA) - Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, stated that the United States Congress would not allow Washington to withdraw from NATO, as there are no reasons to leave the world’s largest military alliance.

On Wednesday (1/4), President Donald Trump declared that he was seriously considering the possibility of his country pulling out of NATO after the alliance refused to assist in military operations against Iran.

“No, Trump will not leave NATO, and neither will America. There are no real reasons for that, and Congress will not allow it,” Medvedev said on Friday.

Medvedev described Trump’s statement as mere “bluffing”.

However, he added, Trump might take some steps to demonstrate the firmness of his stance, including reducing the number of US contingents in NATO or withholding troop deployments.

Medvedev stated that US and Israeli aggression against Iran has worsened the strong contradictions within NATO, with some European politicians “beginning to seriously consider forming a full military component within the European Union”.
