Russia-ASEAN committee meets
MOSCOW (DPA): Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held the founding conference of a joint cooperation committee in Moscow yesterday.
"Aside from improving relations with this regional organization, Moscow would like to strengthen bilateral contacts with each of its members," Interfax news agency quoted Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Grigory Karasin as saying.
Russia was granted observer status in the group last.
Karasin expressed the hope that ASEAN nations' "economic potential" be used to promote development in Siberia and the Russian Far East.
ASEAN, founded in 1989, comprises Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar are scheduled to be admitted this year.
