Russia and China condemn seizure and freezing of foreign state assets
Moscow — Russia and China condemned initiatives involving blocking, freezing, or seizure of assets and property belonging to foreign states in a joint statement released on Wednesday. ‘The parties condemn the initiatives related to blocking, freezing, or seizure of assets and property of foreign states and reiterate their right to take retaliatory measures in accordance with international law,’ the statement said, regarding the further strengthening of the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China. In the statement, the two countries also called for the removal of unilateral coercive measures deemed to violate international law and the purposes of the UN Charter. Russia and China emphasise the importance of respecting the aims and principles of the UN Charter, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states. The two countries also oppose actions that undermine the fundamental interests of other states, particularly in the area of security. The document also stresses the commitment of Russia and China to resolve differences peacefully through dialogue and consultation based on the principles of equality and indivisible security. In addition, the two countries express firm rejection of the use of unilateral sanctions, secondary restrictions, and other trade-distorting practices. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China on 19 May for an official visit. On Wednesday, Putin held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
