Rupiah Weakens to Rp 18,115 on Negative Market Reaction to Mega Corruption Scandal
The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar is predicted to remain volatile but closed weaker in today’s trading. Based on data from the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) published by Bank Indonesia, the rupiah stood at Rp 18,131 on Monday, 13 July 2026, weakening by 62 points from the previous rate of 18,069 on Friday, 10 July 2026. In spot market trading on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, up to 09:01 WIB, the rupiah was transacted at Rp 18,115 per US dollar, a decline of 6 points or 0.03 percent from the previous position of Rp 18,109. Economic and money market analyst Ibrahim Assuaibi stated that the market responded negatively to the alleged mega corruption case involving former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah, as well as conflicts between law enforcement agencies that could have serious repercussions for the national economy. The current legal cases could impact the economy because the law, as a factor in the business environment, clearly influences economic performance through economic behaviour, economic efficiency, investment, and innovation. Countries with poor legal systems, such as Indonesia, tend to experience hampered economic performance and growth. This is not just theoretical but factual, occurring in various countries with weak legal systems. ‘Therefore, the target of 8 percent growth is very difficult to achieve if the business environment is damaged, as seen in the current legal cases,’ Ibrahim said in his daily research note on Tuesday. With the law in such a damaged state, there is no longer any legal certainty, and investor confidence automatically falls. Coupled with policies that are not pro-market, this causes a ‘vote of no confidence’ that will hamper the economy. This situation will in turn hinder the government’s ability to improve public welfare. The Febrie case is the pinnacle of legal decay. In a modern democratic country, law enforcement officials should be pillars of legal certainty and stand at the forefront as eradicators of corruption. ‘But the drama we see is that they become the main actors, corrupt to the core. President Prabowo Subianto is facing a severe test in legal matters and its impact on the economy,’ said Ibrahim.
