Rupiah Weakens in Early Trading, IHSG in the Red

The rupiah’s spot-market exchange rate remained under pressure in early trading on Wednesday, 20 May 2026. The rupiah opened at Rp 17,738 per US dollar, down 0.18% from the previous day’s close at Rp 17,706 per US dollar. With the depreciation, the rupiah registered the deepest correction among Asian currencies in this morning’s session.

Currency movements in Asia were mixed. The New Taiwan dollar fell 0.07% and the Thai baht slipped 0.06%. The South Korea’s won followed suit, weakening by 0.04%. The Hong Kong dollar eased slightly by 0.008% against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the Japanese yen was the strongest gainer in Asia, rising 0.02%. The Philippine peso strengthened by 0.008% and the Chinese yuan advanced 0.006%. The Singapore dollar moved little, with a tendency to appreciate.

On the other hand, the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) traded in the red in early trade on Wednesday. The index fell 33.38 points, or 0.52%, to around 6,337.299. It had opened at 6,352.202, before retreating to a low of 6,282.157. The day’s high reached 6,359.596.
