Rupiah Weakens Further, Approaching Rp18,000 Against US Dollar
The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar opened weaker on Thursday, 18 June 2026. The currency fell by 94 points, or 0.53%, to trade at Rp17,856 per US dollar, compared to the previous close of Rp17,762 per US dollar. This depreciation occurred alongside a decline in the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG), which also opened in negative territory, reflecting broader pressure on emerging market assets. Market participants are adopting a wait-and-see approach ahead of new economic data releases and monetary policy direction. The breach of the Rp17,800 level is a serious concern for importers and industries dependent on foreign raw materials. Bank Indonesia is expected to remain active in the market to stabilise the rupiah and prevent excessive volatility amid strong external pressures.
