Individuals planning to travel abroad are advised to develop mature financial strategies, particularly amidst the ongoing weakening of the Rupiah against the US Dollar. At the close of the spot market early this week, the Rupiah exchange rate touched an all-time low.

However, the public must ensure their financial condition remains healthy and does not interfere with primary priorities, such as emergency funds, loan instalments, or family necessities. “Therefore, the decision to postpone or proceed with travel should be based on financial readiness, rather than just the exchange rate alone,” an expert told Kompas.com on Monday (18/5/2026).

To ensure holidays do not strain personal finances, the expert suggested creating more realistic travel budgets. This includes choosing destinations with more favourable exchange rates and seeking promotions for flights and accommodation, as well as reducing impulsive spending while travelling.

Rista, the expert, cautioned that if calculations reveal that holiday costs will severely impact cash flow or necessitate consumer debt, postponing the trip would be the wiser decision. While many believe that overseas holidays can be prepared for by saving in US Dollars—a trend driven by the Rupiah’s depreciation—this financial strategy may not be suitable for every household.
