Rupiah Weakens as BYD Maintains Electric Vehicle Prices in Indonesia
The weakening rupiah against the US dollar, which has even touched Rp17,800, continues to pressure Indonesia’s automotive industry.
This situation also affects vehicle manufacturers still reliant on international transactions, including for components and production equipment.
“Yes, we understand the current economic dynamics in Indonesia and it is indeed having an impact,” said Luther in Jakarta on 26 May 2026.
Pressure from the US dollar exchange rate is being felt across the automotive industry. Many manufacturers still depend on global transactions for components, raw materials, and specific equipment.
This situation makes potential price increases more likely if the rupiah’s depreciation persists in the long term.
This move is described as the company’s commitment to maintaining public trust and supporting the growth of Indonesia’s automotive industry.
Currently, BYD’s product line in Indonesia is still marketed at relatively competitive prices in the electric vehicle segment.
The BYD M6 is priced from Rp383 million to Rp433 million, while the BYD Seal electric sedan is priced from Rp639 million to Rp750 million.
This decision to maintain prices is positive news for consumers considering purchasing BYD electric vehicles.
However, if currency pressure continues, automotive industry players may adjust prices in the future.
