Rupiah Weakens Again, US Dollar Climbs to Rp 17,975
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The rupiah exchange rate succumbed to the strength of the United States (US) dollar at the close of trading on Thursday (11/6/2026).
Referring to Refinitiv data, the Garuda currency closed down 0.17% at Rp 17,980/US$. This position simultaneously halted the rupiah’s strengthening over the previous two consecutive trading days.
Throughout the trading session, the rupiah actually started the day with a 0.14% gain to the level of Rp 17,925/US$. However, as trading progressed, pressure returned until the rupiah reversed course and remained in negative territory until the close.
Meanwhile, the US dollar index (DXY), which measures the greenback’s strength against six major world currencies, was observed as of 15.00 Western Indonesia Time to have edged up 0.03% to a level of 99.979.
The rupiah’s depreciation occurred in line with the strengthening US dollar in global markets. The greenback’s strengthening limited the room for appreciation for other countries’ currencies, including the rupiah.
The US dollar moved steadily with a strengthening bias as market participants continued to scrutinise the latest developments in the Middle East conflict and US inflation data, ahead of the US central bank’s (The Federal Reserve/The Fed) monetary policy decision on 17 June.
From the geopolitical side, tensions in the Middle East remained a concern after the US again launched strikes against Iran. However, at the same time, commercial shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz was said to be continuing as normal. This condition has kept the market cautious in assessing global energy supply risks.
Meanwhile, from the economic data side, annual US inflation rose to 4.2% in May 2026, in line with market expectations. Even so, market participants also noted that monthly core inflation slowed more deeply than expected to 0.2%.
These conditions give the US central bank room not to rush in determining the direction of its interest rate policy. Nevertheless, the US dollar remained strong because the combination of geopolitical uncertainty and expectations for The Fed’s policy remained the market’s main focus.
From the domestic front, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad assessed that the current rupiah movement is also influenced by increasing market confidence in the government.
Dasco believes the rupiah still has room to strengthen again in line with the government’s performance in improving the economy. According to him, the government has also prepared a number of special strategies to support the exchange rate’s strengthening.
‘I have also received information from the government that this week and going forward, there are special strategies that will be implemented by the government which, from what I have heard, I believe will make the rupiah exchange rate strengthen,’ he explained.
