Rupiah Under Pressure as US Dollar Exchange Rates Approach Rp 17,900 at Major Banks
JAKARTA — The exchange rate of the rupiah against the US dollar weakened in spot market trading on Tuesday (26 May 2026), prompting several national banks to set their US dollar selling rates as high as Rp 17,890 per US dollar. According to Bloomberg data at 12.36 WIB, the rupiah stood at Rp 17,796 per US dollar, down 53 points or 0.30% from the previous close. The depreciation was due to the US Dollar Index (DXY) remaining high at 99 in the morning, though down from last weekend’s 99.51. Additionally, markets are still awaiting concrete progress on US-Iran peace talks. “A potential further weakening towards Rp 17,750-17,800,” a source said. This was reflected in the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) falling due to weakening investor confidence. “Foreign currency demand in May due to dividend repatriation continues to pressure the rupiah,” the source added. Meanwhile, the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) midpoint rate on Monday (25 May 2026) was Rp 17,743 per US dollar. At major Indonesian banks such as BRI, the selling rate for US dollars is set at Rp 17,800 per US dollar, meaning the bank sells dollars at this rate.
