Rupiah Strengthens as Consumer Confidence Remains Optimistic
The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar strengthened at the close of trading on Monday, rising 142 points or 0.79 percent to Rp17,755 per US dollar from the previous close of Rp17,897 per US dollar. Money market analyst Ibrahim Assuaibi said the rupiah’s strengthening was influenced by the Consumer Confidence Index (IKK), which remains at an optimistic level. “Consumers are generally still optimistic about economic conditions, although the level of confidence has continued to decline over the past three months,” he said in a written statement in Jakarta on Monday. Bank Indonesia reported that the July 2026 IKK fell to 116.8 from 117.8 in June 2026. This trend indicates that consumers are becoming more cautious in viewing economic conditions and making spending decisions. If the downward trend continues, Ibrahim said, the room for consumption growth could be pressured as households tend to hold back on spending and become more selective in allocating income. “Therefore, the development of the IKK in the coming months will be important to see how strong the resilience of domestic consumption is amid various economic challenges,” he said. Additional sentiment came from the report that President Prabowo Subianto has officially nominated Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for the definitive Governor of Bank Indonesia to the House of Representatives. From the global perspective, Ibrahim noted that market hopes emerged regarding a potential agreement between Iran and Oman, which could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, easing concerns over US inflation have reduced market expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the market currently sees around a 42 percent chance of a rate hike at the September meeting, down from approximately 67 percent the previous week. The Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR) also strengthened to Rp17,795 per US dollar from the previous level of Rp17,913 per US dollar.
