Rupiah strengthens amid optimism over de-escalation of US-Iran war
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The rupiah exchange rate strengthened by 55 points or 0.32% to Rp16,986 per US dollar on Wednesday morning from the previous close at Rp17,041 per US dollar.
Woori Saudara Bank analyst Rully Nova stated that the rupiah’s strengthening is in line with optimism over the de-escalation of the US-Israel war with Iran.
“The rupiah is expected to strengthen in today’s trading within the range of Rp16,940-Rp17,040, influenced by the decline in the dollar index due to market participants’ optimism regarding the de-escalation of the US-Israel and Iran war,” he told ANTARA in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Citing Sputnik, US President Donald Trump told his staff that he is ready to end military operations against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed.
The report was written by The Wall Street Journal on Monday (30/3/2026), citing several American government officials.
According to the report, in recent days, Trump and his staff concluded that the mission to fully open the Strait of Hormuz could potentially prolong the conflict beyond the initial operation plan, which was estimated to last between four and six weeks.
Trump decided that Washington should focus on its main objectives, namely limiting Iran’s naval capabilities and missile supplies, as well as easing ongoing hostilities, while simultaneously pressuring Tehran to restore smooth trade flows.
From a domestic sentiment perspective, market participants view the government’s upcoming efficient policy measures positively.
However, he added, the market remains cautious due to oil prices still around $100 per barrel.
For Indonesia’s economic data, March 2026 inflation is expected to ease compared to February to 3.65%, influenced by electricity tariff incentives and controlled food prices following Eid al-Fitr.
“The trade balance is expected to still record a surplus of $1.5 billion, better than the previous month with increases in both exports and imports,” Rully revealed.
