Rupiah Rebounds to Rp 16,970 per US Dollar, Strengthens at Start of Trading
Jakarta — The Indonesian rupiah strengthened at the start of trading on Tuesday, 17 March 2026. The rupiah opened at a level of Rp 16,970 per US dollar.
This position represented an increase of approximately 1.6 per cent compared to the previous close at Rp 16,997 per dollar.
Currency movements across the Asian region showed varied performance.
The Philippine peso recorded the largest regional appreciation with a gain of 0.37 per cent. The Taiwan dollar strengthened 0.36 per cent.
The Thai baht posted the steepest decline in Asia after falling 0.37 per cent.
The Japanese yen weakened 0.19 per cent. The Singapore dollar fell 0.06 per cent.
The Hong Kong dollar registered a marginal correction of 0.01 per cent. The South Korean won weakened very slightly by 0.003 per cent.
Positive movement also occurred in the equities market. The Indonesian Composite Index or IHSG strengthened during Tuesday’s trading. The index stood at 7,116.69 points.
The index’s appreciation was driven by dominant activity in stocks in positive territory. Approximately 467 shares gained, 194 shares declined, and 143 shares remained unchanged.
Trading activity was recorded as quite robust. Transaction volume reached 9.71 billion shares. Transaction value totalled Rp 5.20 trillion. Trading frequency was recorded at 631,276 transactions.
