The exchange rate of the Rupiah against the US Dollar in Monday’s trading is expected to undergo limited weakening. Rully Nova, an analyst at Bank Woori Saudara, projects that the Rupiah’s movement will be influenced by market anticipation regarding the release of United States economic data.

“The Rupiah today is expected to weaken within a narrow range of Rp17,900 - Rp17,950, influenced by global factors and the anticipation of US economic data, particularly the Non-Farm Payroll (NFP) data,” Rully stated in Jakarta on Monday.

Market participants are primarily focused on the US NFP data, which is predicted to reach 114,000. This figure represents a decrease compared to the previous month’s realisation of 172,000. Despite the predicted decline, the uncertainty surrounding this labour data continues to trigger a cautious stance in the foreign exchange market.

In addition to labour data, the direction of global monetary policy also poses a burden to the Rupiah. During the European Central Bank (ECB) Forum, projections emerged that central bank interest rates worldwide will be maintained at high levels for a longer period (higher for longer).

Domestically, investors maintain a ‘wait and see’ approach, awaiting the release of trade balance and inflation data scheduled for Wednesday (1/8). Rully noted that Indonesia’s trade balance is expected to maintain a surplus of 1.18 billion US dollars.

The combination of a domestic trade surplus and global interest rate pressures is expected to keep Rupiah fluctuations within a narrow range during the early part of this week.
