Rupiah Plunges, Airlangga: Other Currencies Also Weakening
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that the weakening of exchange rates is not only occurring with the rupiah but also with other currencies. He made this comment in response to the rupiah’s plunge to Rp 17,105 per US dollar on Tuesday, 7 April 2026.
“It’s not just the rupiah; various other currencies are the same,” said Airlangga at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon, 7 April 2026.
The rupiah exchange rate reached Rp 17,105 per US dollar at the close of trading on Tuesday, 7 April 2026. Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures, Ibrahim Assuaibi, predicted that the rupiah would close weaker in the range of Rp 17,100 to Rp 17,150 per US dollar the next day.
According to Ibrahim, one cause of the strengthening US dollar index is investors preparing for potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East ahead of the deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“Disruptions to tanker traffic in recent weeks have tightened supply expectations and increased risk premiums across oil markets,” said Ibrahim in a written statement on Tuesday.
