Rupiah Opens 40 Points Weaker at Rp 17,795 per US Dollar
The rupiah weakened against the US dollar at the opening of trading on Tuesday (11/8/2026), falling 40 points or 0.23 percent to Rp 17,795 per US dollar, compared to the previous close of Rp 17,755 per US dollar.
Currency analyst at Doo Financial Futures, Lukman Leong, stated that the rupiah depreciated amid geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, which has driven up global crude oil prices. "The rupiah is expected to weaken against the dollar amid geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, which has again pushed up world crude oil prices," he said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to a report from Anadolu, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated that the Strait of Hormuz would not be reopened until the United States meets Iran’s demands, including ending the naval blockade of Iranian ports. The statement came as negotiations over the future of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remain deadlocked. Iran has held talks with Oman and reached an understanding on a shipping route map, with consultations ongoing to resolve several technical points in a joint statement. Several mechanisms will be established to ensure maritime traffic safety, protect the environment, and address "maritime crimes."
Additional sentiment stemmed from investors awaiting retail sales data, which are expected to grow by 1.8 percent. Based on these factors, the rupiah is predicted to move within a range of Rp 17,750 to Rp 17,850 per US dollar.
