Rupiah Hits Rp 17,600: Will Subsidised Fuel and LPG Prices Rise? Ministry of Energy Responds

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has addressed the impact of the weakening Rupiah on energy subsidies. The Rupiah continues to decline against the US Dollar, closing at Rp 17,668 per USD in Monday’s trading.

The Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of ESDM, Laode Sulaeman, stated that the price of 3kg subsidised LPG is certain not to increase, despite surging energy prices and the weakening currency. He noted that there has been no change to the previous policy, in which the government established that there would be no price hikes for subsidised energy until the end of the year.

In 2025, Indonesia’s LPG import portion reached 80.58 per cent of total national requirements, and as of February 2026, the import portion rose to 83.97 per cent. Regarding subsidised fuel (BBM), Laode maintained that the current policy remains unchanged. “As the Minister (of ESDM) has announced… (Will it remain unchanged until the end of the year?) It will not change,” he said.

Regarding the price of non-subsidised fuel, such as Pertamax, which has also not seen an increase so far, Laode declined to comment extensively. He acknowledged that volatile global oil prices do impact domestic fuel production costs. “I cannot answer that yet. The current price trends are fluctuating, and I do not want to provide incorrect information,” he added.
