Rupiah Falls to 17,130 Following ADB Projections on Indonesia's 2026 Economy and Potential Prolonged Iran-US War
Jakarta, VIVA – The rupiah’s exchange rate against the US dollar is expected to remain volatile but closed weaker in trading today.
According to data from the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) from Bank Indonesia, the rupiah against the US dollar stood at Rp17,122 on Monday, 13 April 2026. This position weakened by 10 points from the previous rate of Rp17,112 on Friday’s trading, 10 April 2026.
Meanwhile, in spot market trading on Tuesday, 14 April 2026 until 09:02 WIB, the rupiah was traded at Rp17,130 per US dollar. This position weakened by 25 points or 0.15 percent from the previous level of Rp17,105 per US dollar.
Economic and money market observer, Ibrahim Assuaibi, stated that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) projects Indonesia’s economic growth to reach 5.2 percent in 2026, higher than last year’s realisation (5.1 percent) but lower than the government’s target (5.4 percent). This projection remains within Bank Indonesia’s (BI) inflation target range of 2.5±1 percent.
Although Indonesia’s economic prospects are generally positive, the ADB warns of several risks that could disrupt them. Unresolved global geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in energy commodity prices are cited as ongoing threats to national economic stability.
Furthermore, monetary policies in advanced countries, particularly the United States, that remain tight for a longer period (higher for longer) could trigger volatility in capital flows in emerging market financial markets, including Indonesia.
Therefore, the ADB recommends that the government continue to accelerate structural reforms to enhance national productivity and competitiveness. Additionally, optimising state revenues and spending efficiency is deemed crucial to maintain fiscal space in facing future economic shocks.
Stronger formal job growth in the manufacturing sector is vital to support inclusive structural transformation. Meanwhile, the agriculture sector still absorbs a large portion of the workforce, where this sector remains characterised by low productivity and high informality.
“The rupiah is volatile but closed weaker in the range of Rp17,100-Rp17,150,” he said.
