Rupiah Exchange Rate Today: Rupiah Holds at Rp16,900 per US Dollar Ahead of Long Holiday
The exchange rate of the Indonesian rupiah against the US dollar was observed to fluctuate but tended to stabilise around Rp16,900 on Thursday’s trading, 19 March 2026. Based on spot market data and bank references, the rupiah is attempting to escape the psychological pressure of Rp17,000 per US dollar that loomed at the start of the week.
Today’s rupiah stability is driven by Bank Indonesia’s (BI) decision to maintain the BI-Rate at 4.75% in the March 2026 Board of Governors Meeting (RDG).
This step is deemed consistent in maintaining the appeal of domestic assets amid global geopolitical uncertainties, particularly the conflict in the Middle East that has triggered a rise in global energy prices.
Alongside exchange rate dynamics, the price of certified Antam gold bars at Logam Mulia was recorded to increase by Rp8,000 per gram today. The base price of Antam gold for 1 gram is now priced at Rp2,996,000, approaching a new psychological level of Rp3 million per gram.
This rise in gold prices reflects high investor interest in safe-haven assets amid foreign exchange market fluctuations and anticipation of the release of US economic data that will influence the direction of the Fed’s subsequent policy.
Bank Indonesia is predicted to continue interventions in the Domestic Non-Deliverable Forward (DNDF) market and the spot market to ensure rupiah volatility remains controlled amid ongoing global market uncertainties.
