Rupiah Exchange Rate Today, 8 April 2026: Strengthens to Rp16,985

The government faces a policy dilemma with no truly comfortable options.

The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar recorded a positive performance at the opening of trading on Wednesday morning, 8 April 2026. The rupiah today was observed to move significantly stronger, leaving behind the Rp17,100 level that was touched at the previous close.

Based on money market data on Wednesday morning, the rupiah exchange rate strengthened by 120 points or rose 0.70%. With this strengthening, the rupiah is now at the position of Rp16,985 per US dollar, compared to the previous day’s trading close at the level of Rp17,105 per US dollar.

Several analysts assess that the rupiah’s strengthening was triggered by the declining US dollar index in the global market as well as the positive market response to Bank Indonesia’s monetary policy. In addition, the rise in prices of Indonesia’s flagship export commodities also provided fundamental support for the exchange rate’s strengthening.

Although showing a positive trend, market players are still advised to be vigilant against potential volatility that may occur ahead of the release of US economic data at the end of this week. Bank Indonesia is expected to continue to be in the market to ensure that rupiah volatility remains in line with its fundamentals.
