The strengthening of the rupiah against the United States (US) dollar in recent days has been supported by Bank Indonesia’s (BI) strategy to maintain exchange rate stability.

This was revealed by BI’s acting governor Destry Damayanti during a press conference following the central bank’s board of governors meeting on Wednesday (19/8/2026).

“The rupiah exchange rate strengthened, supported by BI’s stabilisation policy response,” said Destry.

Destry said that on 18 August 2026, the rupiah exchange rate was recorded to have moved in the range of Rp 17,855 per US dollar, or strengthened 0.78% point-to-point compared to the end of July 2026.

BI, according to Destry, believes that the rupiah exchange rate will continue to remain stable going forward, in line with the central bank’s policy of optimising all monetary instruments.

“BI is pursuing a strategy of maintaining exchange rate stability. Going forward, the exchange rate will be stable, supported by BI’s strengthened stabilisation measures,” said Destry.

As is known, the rupiah exchange rate opened stronger against the US dollar in trading this morning, ahead of the announcement of the results of Bank Indonesia’s (BI) Board of Governors Meeting (RDG).

Referring to Refinitiv data, at the opening of trading on Wednesday (19/8/2026), the rupiah appreciated 0.11% to a position of Rp 17,830/US$.

The strengthening reversed the pressure from the previous trading session, Tuesday (18/8/2026), when the Garuda currency closed down 0.17% at a level of Rp 17,850/US$.

Meanwhile, the US dollar index (DXY), which measures the strength of the greenback against six major world currencies, was observed at 09.00 WIB to have strengthened slightly by 0.03% to a position of 99.688.
