Jakarta, Kompas.com - The rupiah in the spot market edged higher in early trading on Thursday, 21 May 2026. The rupiah’s movement tracked the majority of Asian currencies which tended to strengthen against the US dollar. The Philippine peso was the strongest gainer in Asia after rising 0.19 percent. The Chinese yuan appreciated 0.05 percent, the Japanese yen and the Hong Kong dollar rose 0.03 percent each, and the Malaysian ringgit firmed 0.02 percent against the greenback. By contrast, the South Korean won was the weakest in Asia, down 0.41 percent. The Thai baht fell 0.09 percent, while the Singapore dollar weakened 0.05 percent.

On the other hand, the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) faced pressure at the start of trade on Thursday. The index was down 14.757 points or 1.82 percent to around 6,203.742. It opened at 6,366.485 and briefly touched a high of 6,378.811. However, selling pressure dominated, pushing the index down to a low of 6,201.358. A total of 438 stocks were in the red, 162 gained, and 129 were unchanged. Trade volumes reached 8.545 billion shares with a frequency of 534,291 trades. In terms of value, market turnover reached Rp 4.744 trillion with a market capitalisation of Rp 10,736.629 trillion.
