Rupiah Closes Stronger at 18,091 per US Dollar
The rupiah exchange rate in the spot market on Tuesday afternoon, 14 July 2026, strengthened by 18 points to 18,091 per US dollar compared to the previous day’s close. Data from the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate showed the rupiah on Tuesday was in the range of Rp 18,099, strengthening from the previous level of Rp 18,131 per US dollar. The Indonesian currency has been at the 18,000 level since 8 July, after previously strengthening to the 17,000 level per US dollar.
Currency and commodity analyst Ibrahim Assuabi, who is also Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures, predicted the Garuda currency would move in a volatile manner on Wednesday, 15 July 2026. ‘However, it will close weaker in the range of 18,090 to 18,140 per US dollar,’ he said via an official statement on Tuesday.
The rupiah’s strengthening occurred even as the US dollar was also gaining ground. According to Ibrahim, a key global sentiment factor is the unresolved tension in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump is set to reimpose a naval blockade on Iran following renewed military exchanges with Tehran. Trump also stated that Washington would levy a 20 percent fee on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz to cover security costs. This situation has raised concerns among investors that retaliatory actions will disrupt distribution channels. Citing Trading Economics, world oil prices surged above US$85 per barrel on Tuesday, driven by the Strait of Hormuz blockade and the threat of levies, pushing the weekly price increase to more than 10 percent.
On the domestic front, the rupiah’s strengthening was also supported by the latest assessment from international rating agency S&P Global Ratings regarding Indonesia’s credit rating and outlook. S&P maintained the sovereign debt rating at BBB, or investment-grade, with a stable outlook, citing the country’s strong economic prospects. This assessment provided positive sentiment for the market.
