Rupiah briefly touches Rp 17,900, closes at Rp 17,845 on Thursday
JAKARTA – The rupiah closed weaker against the US dollar on Thursday (28 May 2026), according to Bloomberg data. The currency ended at Rp 17,845 per US dollar, a decline of 44.5 points or 0.25 per cent from the previous close. It briefly touched a low of Rp 17,906 around 10:58 am WIB.
Currency and commodities analyst Ibrahim Assuaibi said external and domestic factors pressured the rupiah today. US President Donald Trump threatened to attack Oman, a nation facilitating Iran-US peace talks, while Ukraine has requested US assistance to counter Russia’s attack on Kyiv involving hundreds of drones and missiles.
‘This has sharply heightened political tensions in both the Middle East and Eastern Europe,’ he told media on Thursday.
Rising oil prices are expected to fuel global inflation, including in the US, increasing expectations that the US Federal Reserve will maintain high interest rates for longer. On Wednesday, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari stated that the central bank’s main concern is higher inflation rather than a deteriorating labour market.
