Rupiah Breaches Rp18,100 per US Dollar
Pressure on the rupiah deepened in early trading this week, Monday (13/7/2026). The US dollar has now broken through the next psychological level at Rp18,100/US$.
According to Refinitiv data, at 09.06 WIB the rupiah weakened 0.38% to Rp18,110/US.Thatlevelwasbreachedonlyaboutsixminutesaftertradingopened.At09.00WIB, therupiahhadalreadyopened0.17.
The pressure on the Garuda currency this morning also reversed the rupiah’s strengthening in the final trading session of last week; on Friday (10/7/2026), the rupiah closed stronger at Rp18,045/US$.
The rupiah’s weakening this morning came amid a strengthening US dollar index (DXY). The DXY, which measures the greenback’s strength against six major world currencies, was up 0.22% at 101,178 as of 09.00 WIB.
The US dollar strengthened as conflict in the Middle East flared up again. The tension has triggered inflation worries and brought the prospect of global central bank rate hikes back into the market’s focus.
Over the weekend, United States and Iranian forces resumed launching missile and drone attacks against each other. Iran targeted US facilities in several Gulf countries on Sunday, while also announcing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy trade.
These developments have also driven up oil prices. Brent crude was up 3.3% at US$78.49 per barrel at the start of Asian trading.
The rise in oil prices is a concern because it could add to global inflationary pressure. A renewed increase in inflation could raise the odds of a US central bank (The Federal Reserve/The Fed) rate hike.
