Rupiah Breaches Rp 17,300, Airlangga: Government Continues to Monitor
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto commented on the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar, which breached Rp 17,300 on Thursday afternoon (23/4/2026). Airlangga stated that the government is continuously following the latest developments regarding fluctuations in the rupiah exchange rate.
“Yes, we are just monitoring because various currencies in the region are also volatile,” said Airlangga after the press conference on the Realisation of Quarter I 2026 Investment and Implementation of KBLI 2025 at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM Office, Jakarta, on Thursday (23/4/2026).
Airlangga explained that the rupiah’s weakening is inseparable from global geopolitical volatility. This has put the rupiah under pressure.
“Yes, it’s due to the volatility, global volatility as well. So we are just monitoring,” said Airlangga.
Airlangga stated that the government is urging Bank Indonesia (BI) to maintain the stability of the rupiah exchange rate. Airlangga has not yet disclosed the government’s plans in responding to the rupiah’s collapse, which is above the 2026 state budget assumption of Rp 16,500 per US dollar.
“We will just monitor it because we can’t be reactive every day. We are just monitoring, and it’s BI’s job to maintain it,” said Airlangga.
