The rupiah exchange rate closed sharply stronger against the United States dollar in trading ahead of the weekend, Friday (17/7/2026). According to Refinitiv data, the rupiah ended trading at Rp17,885/US, strengtheningby0.53. The rupiah consistently moved in positive territory from the start of trading. The Garuda currency opened at Rp17,980/US$, then continued to strengthen until the close. At the same time, the US dollar index (DXY), which measures the greenback’s strength against six major world currencies, was observed weakening. As of 15.00 WIB, the DXY had corrected by 0.07% to 100.695. The rupiah’s strengthening today was in line with the weakening of the US dollar in global markets. The greenback was also on track for a weekly decline after lower-than-expected US inflation data eased market fears regarding a near-term interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve. Other economic data indeed shows the US economy remains quite strong, especially with a relatively stable labour market. However, economists expect the Fed will hold interest rates at its meeting this month after US consumer inflation slowed in June. Fed officials remain cautious, with Vice Chair Philip Jefferson even opening the possibility of a rate hike if inflation improvement does not continue. The rupiah also received positive sentiment from Indonesia’s investment realisation, which continued to grow in the first half of the year. The government recorded that investment realisation for the first semester of 2026 reached Rp1,010.6 trillion, growing 7.2% year-on-year. This amount is equivalent to 49.5% of the 2026 investment target of Rp2,041.3 trillion. Of the total, Domestic Direct Investment reached Rp502.9 trillion, while Foreign Direct Investment was recorded at a slightly larger Rp507.6 trillion. The significant portion of foreign investment provides positive sentiment for the rupiah, as it indicates that overseas investor interest in the Indonesian economy remains sustained.
