Run for Equality 2026: Creating a Safe Sporting Space for People with Disabilities
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The charity running event titled ‘Run for Equality 2026’ will be held on 26 July at Senayan Park, Jakarta, featuring 3K, 5K, and 10K distance categories.
Carrying the spirit of ‘Equal Steps, Equal Play’, the Run for Equality aims to create a safe and equitable sporting environment for all children, particularly girls and persons with disabilities.
“Through Run for Equality 2026, we want to encourage the creation of more inclusive sporting and public spaces, where every child and young person, including those with disabilities, has an equal opportunity to participate, play, and grow without discrimination,” said Dini Widiastuti, Executive Director of Plan Indonesia, in an official statement on Tuesday.
This initiative is vital given that the challenges regarding inclusivity faced by persons with disabilities in Indonesia remain high. Although Law Number 8 of 2016 guarantees the rights of persons with disabilities, various challenges persist in daily life. Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) and the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs show that only 17.2 per cent of persons with disabilities of productive age have access to formal education.
Furthermore, more than half of persons with disabilities in Indonesia still face barriers in accessing basic services such as education, healthcare, employment, and inclusive, safe public spaces.
“Inclusivity is not just about including persons with disabilities in an activity, but ensuring they can participate meaningfully, safely, and equally. Initiatives like Run for Equality are important to drive public awareness that sport is a right for everyone,” she added.
Support for the inclusivity movement through sport also comes from the private sector. Michelle Marietta Secoa, Sustainability Lead at UNIQLO Indonesia, stated that cross-sector collaboration plays a crucial role in creating a more inclusive environment for all.
“We believe that sport has the power to unite many people and build self-confidence. Therefore, it is important for all of us to continue creating more open, comfortable, and inclusive spaces for children and young people, including those with disabilities,” she said.
In addition to highlighting issues of equality and inclusion, Run for Equality also features a fundraising campaign to support the provision of assistive devices and supporting facilities for children with disabilities in East Nusa Tenggara via the Kitabisa.com platform.

Run for Equality 2026 is open to all levels of society and is designed to be an inclusive space for everyone.
