Run-down school nearing collapse

PURWAKARTA, West Java: Students and teachers are taking a considerable risk by attending classes at Nagrog Elementary School in Sakambang village in the West Java regency of Bojong, as the poorly maintained school could collapse at anytime.

"Classroom activities have been interrupted by concerns that the building could suddenly fall apart," several elementary students and a teacher said on Monday.

The Nagrog elementary school has six classrooms, with one room that has the ceiling already caved in. The staff room also looks like it is about to collapse if there is a strong wind.

"If the wind gets strong then classroom activities are often suspended and students are banned from playing inside or even in the schoolyard because it could collapse suddenly," said Sukarna, who lives near Nagrog school.

The school also lacks desks for the students. -- Antara
