Rumah Zakat Visits Elderly Breadwinners in Tumpatan Village
Tumpatan, July 2026 – Rumah Zakat, through its Inspiration Volunteers, continues to strengthen its support for programme participants by making courtesy visits to beneficiaries of the Ramah Lansia (Elderly-Friendly) Programme, who also receive small-business economic support, in Tumpatan Village, Beringin Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency.
These visits are not merely courtesy calls, but a form of Rumah Zakat’s care in ensuring that programme participants remain enthusiastic in running their businesses, maintain their health, and stay motivated to be independent in their old age.
Still Fighting for Her Grandchild
On Sunday (05/07/2026), Inspiration Volunteers visited the home of Ibu Boinem, an elderly woman who has long struggled to support herself together with a grandchild who has lost their father.
To meet her daily needs, Ibu Boinem runs a small business selling ice and various children’s snacks in her neighbourhood. Although no longer young, her spirit in earning a living has never wavered.
For Ibu Boinem, working is not merely about earning a living, but also a form of responsibility and affection towards her grandchild, so that the child can continue to live a better life.
The Inspiration Volunteers offered encouragement, urging her to maintain her health, stay optimistic, and trust that every effort made with honesty will bring blessings from Allah SWT.
Ibu Boinem’s spirit serves as an example that working with dignity is far nobler than depending on others, in accordance with the message of the Prophet Muhammad SAW that ‘the hand that gives is better than the hand that receives.’
Tracing the Morning with a Jamu Seller
The next visit took place on Saturday (11/07/2026) with a call on Pak Mansyur, a participant of the Ramah Lansia Programme who every morning delivers traditional jamu (herbal drinks) to his loyal customers.
From 06:30 Western Indonesian Time, Pak Mansyur begins his activities. Together with his wife, he prepares various types of traditional jamu at home, then they take turns selling and delivering it to customers.
Pak Mansyur shared that before running his jamu business, he had worked as a public transport driver. However, as he grew older, he chose to change professions so that he could continue working and meet his family’s needs in a way better suited to his physical condition.
Now, together with his beloved wife, he runs his traditional jamu business with diligence and gratitude. Although the business is run in a simple manner, their determination to keep striving is an inspiration to many.
In a warm and friendly atmosphere, the Inspiration Volunteers sampled the traditional jamu prepared by Pak Mansyur while discussing the development of his business, the challenges he faces, and hopes that the business will continue to grow and improve his family’s welfare.
Support That Strengthens
Through these courtesy visits, Rumah Zakat wants to ensure that empowerment does not stop at the provision of assistance alone, but continues with mentoring, motivation, and mental strengthening so that participants become increasingly confident in running their businesses.
Visits like these also serve as a means of strengthening the family bonds between the Inspiration Volunteers and the beneficiaries, so that every challenge faced can be discussed together and solutions sought step by step.
The stories of Ibu Boinem and Pak Mansyur prove that age is not a barrier to remaining productive. With spirit, hard work, and prayer, they continue to strive for their families and serve as real examples that independence can be achieved through halal and sincere endeavour.
‘Age may increase, but the spirit to strive must never fade. As long as there is hope and prayer, there is always a way to seek the sustenance that Allah SWT has prepared.’
