'Rumah Api' in Seyegan Not a Natural Phenomenon, Police Investigate Possible Deliberate Acts
The Sleman Regency Government has announced the final conclusions of research into the mysterious fire phenomenon that burned items in a resident’s house in Seyegan. The results unanimously concluded that the fires were not caused by a natural phenomenon.
This was revealed by the Head of the Sleman Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Bambang Kuntoro, following an inter-agency meeting at the Sleman Regent’s office. The meeting was attended by teams from Gadjah Mada University (UGM), the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Centre (BPPTKG), UPN ‘Veteran’ Yogyakarta, and other relevant agencies, who presented their final research findings.
Bambang stated that the conclusion regarding the appearance of the mysterious fires found no connection to natural phenomena. “The essence is that from the fire phenomenon that appeared in Seyegan, based on the research results everyone presented earlier, there is no relationship with natural phenomena that could cause the fires in Seyegan,” Bambang told reporters at the Sleman Regent’s office on Monday (15/6/2026).
According to the information presented, no strong evidence was found that the fires appeared naturally. Based on sample tests of fire residue from the incident location conducted by UGM, the analysis associated the residue with PVC resin, which is highly flammable when it encounters an ignition source.
Based on geological field observations and geophysical studies conducted by UPN ‘Veteran’ Yogyakarta, no relationship was found between the recurring fire incidents and the surrounding geological conditions or the presence of gas bubbles in the Nepen River. Meanwhile, based on test results from BPPTKG, no indication of hazardous natural gases capable of causing fires was found, and temperature measurements did not reveal any significant temperature anomalies that could trigger the flames.
“The gas content, whether methane, hydrogen, phosphine gas, or marsh gas, from each of these, is either non-existent or below the threshold capable of causing fire,” he stressed.
Following these conclusions, the police have stepped in to conduct an investigation to uncover the cause of the recurring fires. The Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Sleman Police, AKP Mateus Wiwit Kustiyadi, stated that his party will seek out the facts in this case.
“In this matter, we are looking for facts. Where these facts will lead us, we do not yet know. So, we are gathering the facts present at the scene,” Wiwit said when met at the Sleman Regent’s Office on Monday (15/6/2026).
Wiwit added that the police have not yet investigated the possibility of criminal elements in this case. Before moving in that direction, the police will first determine whether there was an element of intent in these incidents. “Later, whether there are things beyond natural phenomena, we will still gather information, so the facts will be revealed after this,” he concluded.
