The leaders of the United States, Japan, Australia, and India are planning to hold a meeting of their Quad group later this year, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday. In testimony before the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Rubio added that the Quad Summit would likely take place on the sidelines of another multilateral meeting in the Indo-Pacific region. “We are working on many things together with them, and working to expand it,” he said during the panel hearing regarding President Donald Trump’s fiscal 2027 budget request for the State Department. In late May, Rubio and his fellow foreign ministers from Japan, Australia, and India gathered in New Delhi and agreed to enhance cooperation in securing a stable supply of energy and critical minerals. The last Quad Summit was held in 2024, when Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, was in office. The four-nation grouping sought to convene a leaders’ meeting in India last year, but that plan did not materialise amid tensions in New Delhi’s relationship with Washington. Trump has indicated he may travel to the region later this year, when China hosts the annual Asia-Pacific economic forum in the southern city of Shenzhen in November. The US, Japan, and Australia are members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, but India is not. Additionally, in November, the Philippines is also scheduled to host a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners, which includes all Quad members.
