KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin will visit Malaysia at the end of the month following a trip with President Bill Clinton to China, officials said yesterday.
Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim's spokesman said Rubin would make a courtesy call on Anwar. Diplomats said the brief visit was planned for June 28-June 29. It was not clear whether Rubin would visit other countries in the region.
Washington has generally praised Malaysia's handling of an economic crisis that has battered the ringgit currency, share prices and companies' bottom lines.
But U.S. officials have pressed Malaysia and its neighbors to strengthen regulatory agencies' powers and make the economic system more transparent.
